What are pinworms?
Pinworms are parasites that live in the rectum and can measure between 0.5 and 1 cm in length, almost as similar to the size of a staple.
They are located in the small and large intestine, from where the females migrate to the perianal area (anus) to deposit their eggs, which contain larvae.
How we get infected
The contagion is fecal-oral, that is, when the mouth comes in contact with food contaminated with the parasite’s eggs, or with contaminated surfaces. We can also get infected by using contaminated personal items.
Children usually become infected by touching pinworm eggs and then putting their fingers in their mouths, this in a way that goes unnoticed.
Once the eggs are ingested they hatch in the small intestine and ripen in the colon.
Of care
As we said above, the eggs of these parasites cannot be seen, but they could be scattered in our pajamas, trout, food or other elements. Then it spreads from person to person.
There are symptoms
How to know if our children have been infected with pinworms? There are some signs and symptoms that we can see.
Normally at night, these worms move to the child’s anal area to lay more eggs. This action causes intense itching, a sensation of itching that the child will begin to complain about.
The worst thing is that it can be scratched directly with the hands and then they are contaminated, the eggs remaining under the nails.
Finally, under the nails they are transported by infecting other children, family members, and household items.
Other symptoms
In addition to itching, other symptoms include lack of sleep, appetite, irritability and consequently weight loss.
What to do
Surely the doctor will ask the child to perform the famous Graham test, a type of transparent patch that should be placed in the anal area. With the confirmation a medication called Mebendazole will be prescribed, the amount, frequency and milligrams, should be specified by the specialist, who will recommend that this treatment be followed by all family members.
Do not delay in making an appointment with the doctor, you should know that in the case of girls this problem can be aggravated in the vaginal area, where pinworms usually migrate, causing vaginitis or infection.
How to prevent it
You should not shake your clothes or bedspread if you suspect they may be infected with the eggs of this parasite, this would only facilitate its spread.
If the child could be infected at the school or nursery, contact the authorities of that institution, so that the rest of the parents and the other children can be tested.
Keep your hands neat, after going to the bathroom, wash thoroughly with soap and water. Do the same before eating or eating food.
Wash food, vegetables, and fruits properly, before consuming them.
Keep nails short and clean.
Natural treatment
It would be good if the medical treatment is followed, they can start a natural treatment. Or failing that if for some pressing reasons they have not been able to go to a specialist, they can try these recommendations, until they get a medical appointment.

Boil ½ teaspoon of thyme, with ½ teaspoon of gentian root, ½ teaspoon of bitter chamomile and ½ glass of water for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and let this preparation stand for another 10 minutes. Take on an empty stomach for 9 days. Only if the affected person is over 9 years old. Double the dose for adults.
Garlic
Cut three garlic cloves into very small pieces, put it in a glass and pour very hot water over them. Let it sit overnight and drink the water, fasting, the next morning. If you wish you can also swallow the garlic pieces, without the water.
